Facts About Herut North America

Our History

In 1999, Herut-The National Movement was established an registered in the Israeli Department of Party Registry formed by former Likud activists led by Knesset members Benny Begin, Michael Kleiner, and David Re’em. The Breakaway was the result of disagreements with Likud leader, Benjamin Netanyahu over the Wye River Memorandum and the Hebron Agreement. Herut went on to run in three Israeli national elections: 1999, 2003, and 2006.

Upon inception, the movement joined the World Zionist Organization, set up party branches all over the world, and established a young adult movement, Magshimey Herut – the reborn Jabotinsky movement for Zionist education and activism. Herut has active branches in 11 countries today. Since 2004, the threshold for Knesset membership has been raised twice.

In 2009, founders of the New Herut party, MK Benny Begin and the head of the Likud Supreme Court, Michael Kleiner, rejoined the Likud. Those true to the Herut ideology continue to advocate for the integrity of the Land of Israel and the unity of the people of Israel under the World Herut and the Magshimey Herut banner.

Presently, World Herut and Magshimey Herut concentrates its efforts on gaining adherents to Herut ideology, promoting Aliyah, and the absorption of Olim (Jews returning to Israel) into Israeli society.

Three Pillars of Herut North America

Human Rights

Human Rights is at the heart of our movement. Our founding father, Ze’ev Jabotinsky regarded each person as equal, no matter his or her social, economic or political Status. Herut, therefore, does not campaign on behalf of only Israel related issues. We will campaign for a more just and fair society, by holding human rights as a core value Jabotinsky wrote, “The first consequence of ‘every man is a king’ is, obviously, universal equality: the essence of your or my royalty is that there cannot be anyone above you or me in dignity or status. The second consequence is individual liberty: a king is nobody’s subject.” Herut is, therefore, politically democratic and an authentic fusion of traditionalist conservatism and classical liberalism; we believe in tree-markets, civil rights, and that evil should be confronted with power.

Jewish Unity

Our community is far too divided. This division works to the detriment of our cause and our people’s interests. We work to unite all Jews, no matter their religiosity. Our motto is ‘Zion Unite’ – now more than ever, standing as one people together, we are stronger.

Integrity of the Land of Israel

As the civil rights movement of the Jewish people, Zionism, is our means to national liberation. We vehemently oppose any division of Jerusalem or any other part of the land which our ancestors bequeathed to us, it is morally, historically, and legally our land. We have a duty to proactively challenge anti-Israel propaganda and educate Jews and non-Jews about our rights to the land and the security needs of Israel.
